This April we are supporting Stress Awareness Month, a month dedicated to bringing organisations, communities, and individuals across the UK together to improve their understanding of stress, its causes, and its impact on wellbeing. Since its inception in 1992, the month‑long initiative has aimed to break the stigma surrounding stress and promote healthier, more resilient lifestyles.
This year's official theme 'Be The Change', encourages individuals and organisations to shift from awareness to active participation with a focus on empowering people to adopt small, consistent habits that collectively contribute to better mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing.
The theme marks a progression from previous years, reflecting the evolving challenges of modern life. In 2024, the focus was on Little By Little, highlighting incremental actions, while 2025 embraced Lead With Love, encouraging compassion in how we treat ourselves and others. The 2026 theme continues this journey, calling for personal responsibility and collective change.
Stress remains one of the most significant wellbeing issues in the UK today. Research shows that 74% of adults have felt so stressed in the past year that they became overwhelmed or unable to cope, while work‑related stress, anxiety, and depression continue to account for nearly half of all work‑related ill‑health cases nationwide.
The human cost is matched by financial impact. Stress‑related absence and burnout are estimated to cost UK employers £28 billion per year, contributing to a wider mental‑health‑related economic burden of around £51 billion annually.
With presenteeism also on the rise and often more damaging than absenteeism, many organisations are struggling to respond adequately. Nearly three in ten workers feel their employer is not managing workplace stress effectively, highlighting an urgent need for stronger wellbeing support strategies.
The 2026 campaign emphasises simple, sustainable behaviours that can make a measurable difference. The Stress Management Society recommends:
These accessible actions align with this year’s 'Be The Change' philosophy, empowering individuals to influence their wellbeing through manageable, everyday choices.
Stress Awareness Month acts as both a reminder and a rallying cry. While stress is a universal experience, how we respond — as individuals, organisations, and communities, determines our collective resilience. As awareness grows, so does the importance of transforming understanding into action.
This April, the campaign invites everyone to take part. Whether through workplace initiatives, personal practices, community conversations, or simply noticing how you feel each day, everyone can contribute to a healthier, more compassionate society.
