As we continue to celebrate our 10 year anniversary we are putting the spotlight on the "Faces behind the speakers" and this week its on Jim Lawless!!!!!!!!
WHERE WERE YOU 10 YEARS AGO?
In January 2010 I decided to take the British Freedive record to move my research forward, to raise money for pediatric research as my daughter had been very ill and to aid my understanding of the fear mechanisms. That month I also gained the backing of the wonderful Robert Kirby of United Agents who became my literary agent and took 'Taming Tigers' into print in numerous languages around the world. Ten years ago was a major turning point for me.
WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO BE IN 10 YEARS?
In ten years, I hope to be in the middle of a happy, healthy family and still working hard to understand humans and their challenge to stretch their wings, grow and perform and still creating useful ways to make this process understandable, manageable, less frightening and more exciting.
WHAT ONE PEARL OF WISDOM WOULD YOU SHARE WITH OUR MEMBERS TO HELP THEM TO BE SUCCESSFUL OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS?
Choose humble curiosity over dumb certainties. We seem to be joining victim based tribes based on fictional “certainties” and on the stereotyping of other groups. It is a tragedy unfolding and may be the biggest mental health threat we face. I suspect that the future will be owned, in every sense, by those who admit lack of certainty and are curious to see what really is rather than joining in a popular, untrue "certainty narrative" of why people like me cannot (and so why trying, effort and risk is not worth the effort). Blame is safe. Curiosity is high risk. It involves, in the words of Stephen Sondheim: “Being Alive!"
