We would like to start by thanking those who attended the Operational Excellence & Digital Network on Thursday the 13th October 2022 at BDO in Liverpool. It was great to see such a fantastic turnout face to face and we are grateful for your contributions and to our member contribution Justine Oxley and our host for the day David Newman.
A number of sli.do questions were presented throughout the day. A summary of your outputs relevant to each interactive session were as follows:
In relation to Data Governance and delivering Added-Value, 50% of the group believed their organisations were compliant with data management best practice in some process areas where they have the right capabilities in place to embed and sustain, but not in others. The three top areas you believed were not governed as well were around Forecast, Employee and Pricing & discount data. On the flip side you cited Customer, Financial Reporting and Supplier data as areas that were governed better. A further discussion identified themes such as lack of ownership, governance, and investment as drivers of less well governed data. Conversely, better governed data was facilitated by regulatory compliance, higher risk data sets, level of importance placed on the data and alignment of systems & system capability. Top two biggest tips from the group on data governance best practice included ownership and audit followed closely by engagement and sponsorship.
The second sli.do session formed the basis of discussion around ‘The Importance of Data Quality’. You shared what good quality looked like for you which included single data source, accuracy, reliability and more. Vendor master data was one of the top data sources which stood out in terms of quality, which then led us to discuss what tools are used to drive data quality. The list included Power BI and Tableau for system-based tools and controls reporting and testing such as UK SOX.
The sli.do questions helped facilitate the breakout session where members actively participated in sharing their own highs and lows of how data is managed in their organisation.
We had a great member contribution from Justine Oxley at Hallmark on their recent Business & System Transformation project. Justine took us right back to the start of Hallmarks data journey which covered multiple stages including:
In the afternoon session, Justine also shared more insight into the data quality dashboard which Hallmark use today to measure their data quality which started at 8% and is now at an amazing 98%. This session prompted a very interactive and engaging discussion for all members with much to take away around the fact that data management is a journey and not a destination.
We hope you gained the opportunity to widen your network and have taken some learnings from the event.
